Bertold Brecht (1898-1956) is a German writer, theatre critic, and director. The author began writing the play Mother Courage and Her Children in 1938, when fascist Germany was already openly preparing for war. The action takes place in the 17th century, during the Thirty Years’ War. The main character is Ana Firling, called Mother Courage (French “Courage”) – a camp-follower, a seller of food and drinks. War is the main source of her income. Mother Courage is also a mother, not willing her children to die in a fire of war. But maternity and war are incompatible. Mother Courage loses her children…
Director Elmārs Seņkovs (Latvia) uses B. Brecht’s plot to give a document shade for the performance and brings it closer to the present day situation – while preserving the Brechtious spirit and the principles of his creativity.
